Of all the speeding tickets issued in Florida, nearly half of them are written in the 8 counties listed in the chart. Miami leads the pack with over 50,000, but Duval comes in a close second followed by Palm Beach and Broward in the 40,000 range. While COVID impacted everywhere, speeding tickets dropped most dramatically in Broward County. In our last report three years ago, Broward County led the state in speeding tickets issued. The county has fallen to 5th.

Jacksonville / Duval County Is Florida’s New Speeding Ticket “Hotspot”

In our first report in 2017, we identifed Duval County as a hotspot and the area countinues to trend. Duval County was the only major county are that actually saw growth in speeding tickets. 24% more speeding tickets were written post-COVID in 2020 (49,700) than in 2019 (40,178.) Miami ranks first in the speeding ticket category with (50,093) but has more than twice the population. This makes Jacksonville / Duval County Florida’s new speeding ticket hotspot.

Another Speeding Ticket “Hotspot” – The Florida Keys

The Flordia Keys are known for scenic drives but they should also be known for speeding tickets. Law Enforcement agencies in from Key Largo to Key West wrote a respectable 8,331 speeding tickets. The area has very low speed limits and speed traps all over. Many vacationers bring home an extra souvenir from the keys – a speeding ticket.

“Hot Spots” For Moving Violations

With 2.7 million people, it’s not surprising that Miami-Dade takes the first spot when it comes to moving violations. In fact, nearly twice as many moving violations were issued in Miami than Orange, the county with the second highest amount of citations. Moving violations include speeding tickets, red light violations, ran stop signs, careless driving, improper passing, following too close and many others.

The Redlight Camera Violation Effect

A major contributor to moving violation stats in several counties including Miami, Broward and Orange are Red Light Cameras. In Miami alone, over 60,000 of these tickets were issued.

Careless Driving Is The #3 Moving Violation

Often issued as a result of a traffic accident, it’s no surprise that Careless Driving tickets are the third most common moving violation. In the state of Florida, 140,000 were issued in 2020. A sizable chunk (36,000) came from Miami-Dade law enforcement agencies.

Traffic Lawyer Report: Where In Florida You’re Most Likley To Get A DUI

First and foremost, the best way to avoid a DUI is to not drive while intoxicated on alcohol or any other drugs. A DUI arrest can be stressful and the consequences can have a long term, negative impact on your future. Also, your license will be at risk along with your ability to use driving as a means of employment. That said, we looked at FLSMV’s 2020 traffic stats to see if there were any DUI enforcement “hotspots” in the state of Florida. Here’s what we found.

COVID-19’s Impact on DUI Enforcement

Like many other categories of traffic related offenses, DUI cases have dropped in 2020 due to COVID19. Despite considerably less traffic on the roads for a good chunk of the year, local law enforcement in many counties were still busy making DUI arrests. In 2020, there were 37310 DUIs across the state of Florida which is only a 16% drop from 2019.

DUIs By County

Neary half (18,458) of the DUI arrests in the state of Florida are made in eight counties. It’s not surprising that among them are the most populated counties in the state. However, there are a few surprises that present themselves when you look at the numbers broken down geographically.

Hillsborough 3196 DUI Arrests

Pinellas 2752 DUI Arrests

Broward 2549 DUI Arrests

Duval 2489 DUI Arrests

Palm Beach 2323 DUI Arrests

Lee 2171 DUI Arrests

Miami 1532 DUI Arrests

Orange 1446 DUI Arrests

Tampa-Area Is Florida’s DUI “Hotspot”

Hillsborough county leads the state with the most DUI arrests in 2020 with 3,196. It has also lead the state in this category going back to 2017, since we began tracking these stats. Neighboring Pinellas county comes in 2nd with 2,752. This is a clear indicator that DUI enforcement is much heavier in these two counties. Additionally, a staggering 76% of DUIs in Pinellas County are eventually found or plead guilty. This is well above the state’s 49% guilty rate for the year. These numbers make a compelling arugement to not drink and drive in case you needed another reason to call an Uber in Tampa.

Miami and Orlando Areas Are DUI “Cold Spots”

Despite having the largest population of 2.7 million people and a massive influx of tourists on the roads, Miami-Dade ranked among the lowest of the major population centers when it comes to DUI arrests in 2020. We were surprised to see only 1532 DUIs in Miami for the entire year. Similar numbers (1,446) can be seen in the Orlando-area which seems very low for the number of people in the area. What’s going on here? Are people drinking and driving less or is this a product of enforcement?

“Hot Spots” For Other Criminal Traffic Charges

While Tampa-area ranks highest for DUIs, Miami and Palm Beach are the places you’re most likely to receive any other type of criminal traffic citation. This includes driving with a suspended, expired or without a license. Other charges like fleeing, racing on the highway, reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident is also in this category. Miami leads the state with 36,360 of these types of infractions but surprisingly Palm Beach comes in 2nd with 23,422. While looking deeper, we discovered that Palm Beach County wrote over 14,000 tickets in 2020 for infractions related to no, improper, expired, suspended license or tags. This is signifcantly higher than other Florida counties of similar population.

Miami 36360 Criminal Traffic Citations

Palm Beach 23422 Criminal Traffic Citations

Duval 19035 Criminal Traffic Citations

Hillsborough 16398 Criminal Traffic Citations

Broward 15473 Criminal Traffic Citations

Pinellas 14450 Criminal Traffic Citations

Orange 12604 Criminal Traffic Citations

Lee 7345 Criminal Traffic Citations

Florida Flashers Law: What You Need to Know

Using hazard lights is a great way to make yourself aware of dangers on the road but a new law in Florida allows drivers to do a task that they had been informed was illegal for many years: the simple act of using your hazard flasher lights in the rain. A length transportation bill was signed by the governor just a few days before the law went into effect on Thursday, July 1st.

What Does the New Flashers Lights Law Do?

This law struck down the prohibition of driving with flashing hazard lights in some serious and dangerous weather conditions on roadways. Flashing lights are often used as a way to make yourself more visible to other vehicles and to indicate that your vehicle might be struggling as a result of a mechanical condition or with the weather. Drivers now are eligible to use the triangle button in their vehicle to activate their flashing lights where conditions create extremely low visibility and when those vehicles are driven on roads with speed limits at or beyond 55 miles per hour.

When Can Florida Drivers Use Their Flashing Lights?

Weather conditions that can allow drivers to activate their flashing lights include heavy rain, smoke or fog. According to AAA there are now over 40 other states that approve the use of hazard lights while operating in certain driving conditions. If you are driving in bad weather and have attempted to use your flashers but still do not feel safe, one of the best things to do is to move your vehicle to a stopped position on the side of the road. Prior to July 1, if any Florida had their hazard lights on at all without having real vehicle trouble, they were breaking the law.
According to the previous law, hazard lights were only allowed for when a car is not running on the side of the road or has broken down. The only other time that flashing hazard lights could be used prior to July 1st were when a vehicle was in a funeral procession. There were many promotional campaigns to try to remind Florida drivers that it was illegal to use flashers in rain.
Traveling in severe weather can increase your chances of not only getting into an accident but facing a traffic ticket. If you or someone you know has already received a traffic ticket for any type of illegal driving activity in Florida, you’ll want the services of an experienced traffic ticket lawyer as soon as possible.
There are mixed opinions out there about whether or not using these lights decreases accident risk. Some believe that using flashers reduces visibility for others cars. Some police officers even believe it can make it impossible for them to find the one person on the road who really has broken down or needs help in the midst of all the other flashing lights.
It’s certainly true that in really bad weather conditions, others might not be able to tell what your flashing lights mean. A driver might interpret that you’re having trouble with your vehicle or that your car is broken down, causing them to swerve suddenly to avoid you. This could end up creating an accident rather than preventing one.
