WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE STOPPED BY THE POLICE

At some point or another most of us who drive will be pulled over by law enforcement. Obviously, it’s a nerve-racking experience that probably rates right up there with a trip to the dentist. It is possible, though, to limit the unpleasantness to a minimum if you keep a few pointers in mind. Here what to do if you are stopped by the police:

  • As soon as it is safe to do so, immediately steer over as far as possible to the right-hand curb or shoulder of the road. Be sure to keep clear of intersections.
  • Remain stopped and wait inside your vehicle until or unless the officer directs you to do otherwise.
  • Keep your hands in plain sight.
  • Turn on the interior light if it is dark outside.
  • Comply with directions given by the officer.
  • Upon request, show your license, registration and proof of insurance.
  • Answer questions and communicate honestly and politely. Ask for an explanation if there’s something that is not clear.
  • If a citation is issued, calmly accept it. Keep in mind that acceptance is not an admission of guilt. You will be afforded the opportunity to contest the citation in court.

MOTORISTS CAN BE STOPPED FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS SUCH AS:

  • Traffic Violations.

  • Reasonable supposition of criminal activity based on observation, available information from other police officers, police radio transmissions or a witness.

  • Outstanding warrants.

  • Minor infractions such as a broken taillight, driving after dark without headlights, etc.
